Petition: Proportional Representation

// Home 9 Petitions 9 Proportional Representation Petition

It’s time BC fixed our broken voting system

Stand with the BC Green Party as we call on government to bring in Proportional Representation by the next election.

British Columbians deserve a democracy where every vote counts, where cooperation beats division, and where governments reflect the will of the people — not the fears of the moment.

Right now, our First Past the Post system is broken. It risks handing total control to parties that win less than 40% of the vote, forces people to vote for a party they dislike to stop a party they detest, and shuts out new ideas. Worse, extremists are taking advantage.

It’s time the BC government stepped up to fix this system and protect our democracy — before it’s too late.

Join us by signing our petition and call on the BC government to pass Proportional Representation legislation before the next election.

Petition Text

To the Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled:

The petition of the undersigned, [Name], of [City or Town], states that:

Whereas

  • The current First Past the Post electoral system does not accurately reflect the will of the majority of voters;
  • First Past the Post fosters division, strategic voting, and minority rule, allowing a political party to form government with less than 40% of the vote;
  • This system discourages diverse political representation, limits voter choice, and increases the risk of extremist governments being elected with unearned majorities;
  • Proportional representation is a proven electoral system used in many modern democracies, ensuring fairer outcomes, broader representation, and greater voter trust;
  • The introduction of a proportional voting system in British Columbia would empower voters to express their true political preferences without fear of “splitting the vote” or aiding outcomes they oppose;

Therefore, your petitioners respectfully request that the Honourable House introduce legislation to implement a proportional representation voting system to be used in the next provincial general election, and that a confirmatory referendum be held after two election cycles under the new system to determine whether the public supports its continuation.

Dated this [Day] day of [Month], 20[Year].

We deserve a democracy that truly reflects all of us. Every British Columbian should be able to vote with hope — not fear.

We believe in a democracy where every vote counts, where cooperation triumphs over division, and where governments reflect the will of the people — not the fears of the moment. But right now, our system is broken — and extremists are taking advantage.

Thanks to the BC Greens’ CARGA agreement with the BC NDP, a Committee on Democratic Reform has been created. Now, we need your support to push this committee further.

First Past the Post is failing British Columbians. It risks handing total control to parties that win less than 40% of the vote. It forces people to vote for a party they dislike to stop a party they detest instead of supporting the ideas they truly believe in. It shuts out new voices and leaves most of us without meaningful representation in government.

This isn’t just unfair — it’s dangerous.

We’ve seen what happens when a broken system is left unchecked. In the United States, it helped Donald Trump seize power. Here in B.C., there is nothing stopping a party with extreme views from winning a false majority and forming government in the next election. And once extremists win under this system, it locks in their power, not ours.

Meanwhile, the BC NDP would rather gamble on securing another majority than fix the system. That’s reckless — and it puts our democracy at risk.

If we want to stop extremists from taking power, we need to fix the system that lets them win.

By adding your name to this petition, you are demanding a voting system that reflects your voice — not one that silences it. Together, we can end strategic voting, break the cycle of division, and finally leave First Past the Post behind.

We call on the BC government to pass legislation in time to adopt a Proportional Representation voting system for the next election.

Proportional Representation (Pro-Rep) is used in most modern democracies for good reason. It:

  • Reflects voter support fairly
  • Ends strategic voting and fear-based choices
  • Encourages cooperation and real representation
  • Blocks extremist takeovers
  • Rebuilds voter trust and participation

Under Pro-Rep, you can vote for the future you want — not just against the future you fear.
