BC Greens shocked by news of charges laid against BC Conservative MLA Hon Chan
VICTORIA, B.C. – Jeremy Valeriote, MLA for West-Vancouver-Sea to Sky, on the recent charges laid against BC Conservative MLA Hon Chan:
“The BC Green Caucus is shocked by the news of charges laid against BC Conservative MLA Hon Chan. Domestic violence and intimate partner violence are a scourge on our society, and rarely reported in Canada. We stand with victims, and promote barrier-free access to supports and resources, including the full weight of the justice system, for anyone who needs them.
The Provincial government has recognized and reported on the failures of our systems to treat sexual, gender-based and intimate partner violence appropriately. We know from those reports that survivors face significant barriers and discrimination that prevent people from initiating complaints or utilizing British Columbia’s legal system. That lack of trust and lack of access underscores the need to address barriers in criminal, civil and family law.
It’s incumbent on Members of the Legislative Assembly to uphold the highest standards—and to face accountability if they do not. Elected officials have a responsibility to maintain the public’s trust.
MLA Chan owes it to survivors, the public, the Legislature, and his constituents to resign and to answer to these charges before the courts. Should he refuse to resign, he owes the public an explanation on how he intends to fulfill his duties with these serious charges hanging over him.”
