Lək̓ʔəŋən [LEKWUNGEN] TERRITORY / VICTORIA, B.C. During her northern BC tour—visiting Prince George, Terrace, Hazelton, and Prince Rupert—BC Green Leader Emily Lowan heard a clear and urgent message from workers and Coastal First Nations: no new pipelines.

“Danielle Smith and Mark Carney are trying to ram a pipeline through our province without our consent: this is a betrayal of British Columbians. The TMX disaster left billions of debt on the bills of working people, meanwhile oil prices are crashing and won’t recover. Pushing another crude oil pipeline is reckless, out of touch, and completely indefensible. It is a spit in the face to the people of this province.”

Lowan pointed to the Coastal First Nations, who have been unequivocal in their opposition. “The Wet’suwet’en, the Gitxaala, the Heiltsuk—these Nations have made their stance crystal clear. Breaking the tanker ban could destroy thousands of Coastal workers’ livelihoods for generations. Premier Eby must stand with the Nations and the working people of BC, not bow to Alberta’s oil lobbyists and their billionaire backers.

“This is about standing with the working people of BC against an economically and environmentally disastrous proposal,” Lowan added. “Eby must not fold to Carney and Smith. He cannot allow them to play fast and loose with BC’s Coastal workers, their families, and our environment. Our coast, our workers, and our communities are not expendable, and the BC Greens will fight for them.”

Lowan called on British Columbians to take action:

  • Call your MP and demand an end to this betrayal.
  • Call Premier Eby and insist he defend BC’s people, communities, and climate.

“Danielle Smith’s pipeline will never happen, and we’ll make sure of it. Carney, Smith, and their oil billionaire donors will not hold our province hostage. We will build BC’s economy by fighting for publicly-owned renewable energy projects, good union jobs, and a wealth tax. We will not jeopardize our province at the behest of the 1%”, Lowan said.
