VICTORIA, B.C. – The BC Green Caucus is calling the latest climate update from the provincial government a “climate inaction plan,” pointing to a troubling lack of progress on critical emissions targets and no plan to get back on track.”
“The province is currently set to reduce emissions by just 18% by 2030, far below the legislated target of 40%. The BC NDP just admitted they’re missing their own climate targets. And they have no plans to fix it,” said BC Green Interim Leader Jeremy Valeriote, MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky.
“They’ve chosen headlines over hard decisions. Climate change is the quiet crisis—we care about it during floods and wildfires, heat domes and heat waves, but when the moment passes, this government lags behind, and our communities remain vulnerable to climate inaction.”
The province is failing to meet its 2030 climate goals, according to its own Climate Change Accountability Report. While the NDP touts per-capita progress, overall emissions keep climbing—especially in transportation, which has jumped 18%. Blaming population growth—like the government is doing—is not a plan. Without more bold investment in public transit and clean energy innovation, communities will be left behind.
“Investments in clean energy projects won’t get us back on track when their purpose is to power oil and gas extraction for export,” said Valeriote. “Clean energy investment needs to electrify our communities, not subsidize emissions-intensive export industries.”
“Emissions must reach net-zero across the province by 2050, but there is no coordinated action to rapidly scale up public transit and offset emissions,” said Valeriote. “We can’t afford incrementalism—we must act now. The NDP abandoned one of the most effective tools we had to reduce emissions—the consumer carbon tax—and they haven’t provided any new strategies to replace it.”
“Countries around the world are showing real climate leadership—and BC is falling behind. Action is possible, we just need the political will to usher it in.”
As part of CARGA the BC Greens will be participating in the 2025 review of CleanBC. For the sake of our collective future, its findings cannot be ignored. We cannot let the CleanBC review become just another report the government ignores. This government must be held accountable to its legislated targets.
