STATEMENT
VICTORIA, B.C. – Statement from Jeremy Valeriote, Interim Leader of the BC Greens and MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky, on Premier David Eby’s decision to end the BC consumer carbon tax following the federal government’s announcement.
“The BC NDP’s decision to end the carbon tax and associated rebates leaves many questions unanswered. The province had budgeted billions in carbon tax revenue over the coming years. If this revenue source is eliminated, what is the plan to make up the shortfall? What programs or services will be cut to fill the gap?
“Beyond finances, what is the province’s plan to address affordability and reduce emissions, to meet the climate crisis head on? And how will they support lower-income British Columbians who were counting on the next rebates in April and then again in July?
“BC Greens have consistently advocated for adjustments to carbon pricing to make it more fair, so that big industrial polluters pay the same per tonne of carbon as everyday British Columbians. Now is the time to fix that imbalance, not abandon climate action altogether. If the tax is going to be cancelled, British Columbians deserve an equally effective alternative that ensures financial security while taking concrete action on climate change. People are struggling, forests and homes are burning – we clearly can’t afford to sit back and do nothing.”
