VICTORIA, B.C. — Jeremy Valeriote, MLA for West Vancouver–Sea to Sky, is calling on the BC NDP government to implement ten urgent climate actions outlined in a new climate action and progress report. The report is backed by 200 organizational signatories, which it says represents nearly half of British Columbians across the province.
“BC’s climate progress, as outlined in this report, echoes much of the work the BC Greens have long argued for. The failing grades show that implementing the CleanBC review recommendations are the bare minimum, and so much more needs to be done. The Province continues to gamble with its climate future at a time when the consequences—both locally and globally—are impossible to ignore. What is particularly concerning in the report is how BCs per-capita emissions are twice as high as comparable jurisdictions like France and the UK.”

“Communities across BC are already living with the impacts of climate inaction. Droughts, floods, and wildfires are no longer abstract warnings—they are recurring realities that disrupt lives, threaten health, and strain local economies. The report highlights how people in places like Kitimat and Dawson Creek are suffering from this firsthand. Climate experts are warning that predictions of long term environmental change are no longer the future—they’re here now. We can’t simply hold our breath and hope the next extreme weather event passes us by—because the evidence tells us another one will come.”
“British Columbians recognize that when we fail to build resilient, sustainable energy systems at home, we leave our economy exposed to the volatility of global geopolitics. The current unrest tied to fossil fuel dependency—often driven by international conflict—underscores a simple truth: climate policy is economic policy, and energy insecurity is political instability by another name.”
“This report is a clear signal to the Premier: listen to your citizens. This report is calling for urgent climate action, including an end to fossil fuel subsidies, fair taxation that requires more from the ultra-wealthy, and increased royalty rates on fossil fuels and water. These corporations don’t live in our communities—their profits often flow offshore, while British Columbians are left to shoulder the environmental and health costs. Residents should not be footing the bill when multibillion-dollar corporations can afford to pay their own way.”
