VICTORIA, B.C. — Jeremy Valeriote, MLA for West Vancouver–Sea to Sky, issued the following statement in response to today’s BC NDP announcement of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to supply electricity to the Ksi Lisims LNG project:
“The Minister says it is the government’s job to ensure projects reach a final investment decision. In doing so, he is overcommitting BC to an LNG industry that is teetering on the edge of obsolescence. The Minister is ignoring that major investors are actively exploring options to sell their stakes in LNG Canada.”
“Nearly half the power from Site C is being earmarked for the Ksi Lisims LNG project at an undisclosed cost to BC Hydro ratepayers. Minister Dix wants British Columbians to be happy about it.”
“Renewable energy—not fossil fuels—is what is driving the global energy transition. So, frankly, we are tired of the Minister repeating the claim that electricity used for LNG is ‘clean energy.’ This is not complicated: clean electricity used to power fossil fuel production becomes dirty energy.”
“Today’s announcement demonstrates the real agenda behind the Bill 31 legislation—it was never just about enabling Indigenous co-ownership, it was about giving Cabinet sweeping powers to grant preferential treatment to specific industries without proper public process. The BC Greens will continue to call out this government for prioritizing partisan spin over the public good.”
“The BC Greens support made-in-B.C. solutions and renewable energy that power our communities—not multinational fossil fuel corporations.”
