Greens hone in on winnable ridings in final campaign stretch

Oct 10, 2024

VANCOUVER, BC — Sonia Furstenau is riding the momentum coming out of her stellar debate performance, turning her attention to key ridings the BC Greens are targeting to win. The BC Greens are seeing a surge in excitement in their top local campaigns coming out of her widely lauded debate.

BC Greens held a rally in new riding Vancouver-Yaletown last night, where candidate and lawyer Dana-Lyn Mackenzie is the only real progressive option on the ballot.

Furstenau  returns Friday to Victoria, where she is running in Victoria-Beacon Hill and the Party sees winnable campaigns all around the capital, particularly in traditional stronghold Saanich North and the Islands, Oak Bay Gordon Head, the Cowichan Valley and Juan-de-fuca-Malahat, as well as new target ridings Esquimalt-Colwood and Saanich SouthCourtney-Comox also continues to put forth a strong local campaign in a competitive riding.

Furstenau has also campaigned multiple times in Kootenay CentralCourtney- Comox and West Vancouver Sea to Sky, where candidate Jeremy Valeriote narrowly lost the riding in 2020 by just 60 votes.

“It’s so exciting to feel the energy in these ridings where our candidates have been working hard to earn voters’ trust,” said Furstenau.

“The other two big parties are offering more of the same – both of their recent majority governments have contributed to the root causes of our biggest problems. The Conservatives are selling a backwards fantasy and a bunch of policies that are either federal jurisdiction or will get thrown out in court. And the BC NDP have put forth an uninspiring plan that won’t meaningfully improve peoples’ lives in the next four years. Neither of them should have 100% of the power. People are looking for something new and voters in these ridings have a chance to elect a stronger BC Green Caucus so we can bring lasting change.”

Co-Chair Adam Olsen has also been campaigning in target ridings and added that he has seen a shift on the ground.

“From lawn signs to volunteers to vote IDs, we can feel these ridings within grasp,” said Olsen.

“I remember the feeling in 2017 when Saanich North and the Islands and the Cowichan Valley reached the tipping point. When people know Greens can win, they get excited about having an independent voice who will put people first. Sonia and I have shown how BC Green MLAs can deliver for their local communities while being hardworking, principled legislators. People in these communities are ready to see more of that in Victoria.”
