BC Greens Leader Emily Lowan Responds to Federal Budget

Nov 5, 2026

VICTORIA, B.C. – Emily Lowan, leader of the BC Greens and MLA-elect for Saanich North and the Islands, has released the following statement in response to the federal government’s 2026 budget:

“This is a central banker’s budget: billions in corporate handouts with incremental relief measures failing to tackle the root cause of the affordability crisis. It’s disappointing to see incoming Premier Lorne Doerkson not stand up for working British Columbians when it comes to how this budget will affect them.

Carney’s corporate welfare will not trickle down to everyday British Columbians—it will continue to enrich the billionaire class and foreign shareholders. Let’s not lose sight of what this budget could have been: public grocery stores, social housing at scale, and public healthcare we can count on.

Instead, a quarter of this budget is dedicated to what the Federal government is calling “productivity mega deductions.” According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, this allows corporations to write off capital investments on their taxes and about 30% (or $10.6 billion) of this handout will go to oil and gas corporations, who will make $90 billion in windfall profits this year alone.

In a time of tremendous economic hardship, it’s appalling to see Prime Minister Carney do nothing to take on the extreme wealth of the billionaire class and mega-corporations, and back pedal on concrete action to build an affordable country for working people.”
