Hold the BC government accountable to its climate targets

Stand with the BC Green Party as we call on the BC NDP to get back on track and meet BC’s climate targets.

British Columbians are living the consequences of climate inaction: record wildfires, devastating floods, heat domes, and dangerous air quality. Yet the BC NDP has admitted they will miss their own 2030 climate targets — with no credible plan to course-correct.

Instead of investing in real climate solutions, the BC NDP continues to prioritize LNG and subsidize the fossil fuel industry. It’s time the government was held accountable to its promises — and to the people on the frontlines of a warming world.

Thanks to pressure from the BC Greens, the province is now launching a review of CleanBC. We’re hopeful it will deliver a stronger climate roadmap — and we’ll be pushing hard to ensure its recommendations are acted on, not shelved.

Add your name to call on the BC government to meet its legislated 2030 climate targets — and stop greenlighting policies that fuel the crisis.

Petition Text

To the Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled:

The petition of the undersigned, [Name], of [City or Town], states that:

Whereas:

  • British Columbia is already experiencing the serious and costly impacts of climate change, including extreme wildfires, heatwaves, floods, and poor air quality;
  • The Government of British Columbia has publicly acknowledged that it is not on track to meet its legislated 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets;
  • The most recent Climate Change Accountability Report shows that current government policy is projected to achieve only an 18% reduction in emissions by 2030, far short of the required 40% reduction;
  • There is currently no detailed or credible roadmap in place to achieve the province’s legislated climate targets;
  • Ongoing government support for fossil fuel expansion, including subsidies and approvals for new oil and gas infrastructure, is inconsistent with British Columbia’s climate commitments and puts public health and safety at further risk;
  • Investment in sustainable public transit, clean energy, and community electrification is essential to a just and effective response to the climate crisis;

YOUR PETITIONERS respectfully request that the Honourable House take the following actions:

  1. Reaffirm and act to achieve the legislated 2030 target of a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions below 2007 levels;
  2. End all direct and indirect subsidies and policy support for fossil fuel expansion in British Columbia;
  3. Ensure that the 2025 CleanBC review results in a clear, science-based roadmap that is transparent, independently verified, and includes annual progress reporting;
  4. Cease using per-capita emissions or other metrics that obscure overall progress toward legislated climate goals.
  5. Recognize the role of sustainable transportation, renewable energy, and community electrification in achieving climate targets, and ensure that related strategies are prioritized in climate policy frameworks.

Because of government inaction, we are already off course on climate — and the BC NDP is taking us in the wrong direction.

The latest Climate Change Accountability Report shows that the BC NDP is not on track to meet the province’s legislated 2030 emissions targets. Instead of the 40% reduction required by law, we’re heading for just 18%. And worse — the government has no roadmap to get back on track.

This is not just a BC NDP policy failure — it’s a threat to our health, safety, and future.

Climate change is already devastating BC communities: from deadly heatwaves and toxic wildfire smoke to floods that displace entire towns. Every delay means more loss, more damage, and more lives at risk.

Instead of real solutions, the BC government is:

  • Greenlighting new oil and gas projects
  • Powering fossil fuel expansion with “clean” energy
  • Blaming population growth for emissions
  • Abandoning the carbon tax without a new strategy
  • Failing to invest in public transit and electrification

This isn’t leadership. This is surrender.

The CleanBC climate plan was meant to be a roadmap to a net-zero future. But right now, it’s off the rails — and the 2025 CleanBC review must result in real, bold action.

We’re calling on the BC government to:

  • Get back on track to meet the 2030 climate target of a 40% reduction in emissions
  • End subsidies and policy support for oil and gas expansion
  • Invest boldly in public transit, clean energy, and community electrification
  • Stop using per-capita emissions to obscure real climate backsliding
  • Use the CleanBC review to take urgent, transparent, and science-based action

The climate crisis is accelerating. But so is the opportunity to lead — to create a clean, just, and resilient economy for all British Columbians.

If you agree that this government must be held accountable to its own climate promises, sign the petition today.
