Lək̓ʔəŋən [LEKWUNGEN] TERRITORY / VICTORIA, B.C. — The BC Greens announced today that Mike Hudema has joined the party’s election leadership team as Campaign Communications Director. Hudema brings more than three decades of experience in public communications, grassroots organizing, and working for social, environmental and economic justice.
Hudema’s career spans Greenpeace Canada, international solutions driven non-profit Canopy and human rights organization, Global Exchange. He will work alongside the party’s leadership, candidates, and local campaign teams to communicate the BC Greens’ vision for a more affordable, fair, and sustainable British Columbia.
“Mike knows what it takes to stand up to the status quo, bring people together, and create real change to improve people’s lives and defend our environment,” said Emily Lowan, Leader of the BC Greens. “He brings years of organizing experience and a belief that people can make the world better when they work together. He’s a formidable addition to our team, and I’m thrilled to be working alongside him.”
At Greenpeace, Hudema helped build public support for protecting B.C.’s coast and addressing climate change, combining national media work, coalition building and large-scale public engagement. His experience includes helping prevent corporate-backed oil sands pipeline projects—Keystone XL, Northern Gateway and Energy East—campaigning against the Trans Mountain expansion, helping organize the largest climate march in Canadian history and helping bring Greta Thunberg to Vancouver during the youth climate strikes.
As Communications Director at Canopy, Hudema worked collaboratively with over 1,000 brand partners to protect old-growth and primary forests in British Columbia and beyond. His work helped advance efforts to keep Ancient and Endangered Forests out of paper, packaging, and textiles and encourage sustainable jobs and industry by scaling old-growth forest free alternatives.
“I’m joining the BC Greens because I believe better is possible, and critically needed — and because Emily is prepared to do the work to make it happen,” said Hudema. “People should be able to afford a home, get care when they need it and know the government has their back. I’m excited to bring my experience to this team and help build a province that puts people first — one that asks those who benefit most to pay their fair share to make it happen.”
Hudema’s appointment adds communications and organizing experience to the BC Greens’ campaign preparations. He joins a campaign cabinet that includes Executive Director Alex Brunke — whose experience includes City Council Campaign Manager and Comms Director for the Green Party of Vancouver in 2018, which saw the election of now-mayoral frontrunner Pete Fry. Brunke was also a key piece of MLA Jeremy Valeriote’s historic 2024 breakthrough on the Mainland with his victory in West Vancouver-Sea-to-Sky.
The party will begin announcing candidates later this week.

Mike Hudema — Campaign Communications Director, BC Greens
Mike Hudema is a communications leader, organizer and author with more than three decades of experience in environmental advocacy, public engagement and social and economic justice. His career has taken him from student leadership to international campaigns challenging corporate practices, to advancing solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises.
Mike previously served as Communications Director at Canopy, a climate campaigner with Greenpeace Canada and Director of Global Exchange’s Freedom From Oil campaign. His experience spans international forest conservation, climate advocacy and campaigns challenging major automakers to improve fuel economy standards. Across these roles, he has led communications strategies, managed teams, acted as a media spokesperson and combined digital engagement with creative campaigning and grassroots organizing.
A graduate of the University of Alberta with degrees in education and law, Mike served as President of the university’s Students’ Union. During his tenure, he advocated for accessible education and helped establish an environmental office, advance ethical purchasing policies and opened the campus’ first Women’s Centre.
The Globe and Mail named Mike as one of their tar sands ‘difference makers’ for his environmental and climate work. In 2014, Alberta Venture named Mike among Alberta’s 50 most influential people.
Mike brings experience in communications strategy, coalition building, digital engagement and team leadership to the BC Greens.
He lives in Victoria, British Columbia.
