  Maureen Curran is a scientist, educator, mother, and longtime community advocate who believes better is possible for British Columbia. She is running to help build a future where public investment strengthens communities, families can afford to thrive, young people have access to good jobs, and decisions are guided by evidence and long-term thinking.

She has spent nearly three decades working in British Columbia’s public education system. For 25 years, she has taught Science and Mathematics in Coquitlam, helping generations of students develop the critical-thinking skills needed to navigate a changing world. She also spent four years with Simon Fraser University’s teacher education program, mentoring future educators and helping build creative, sustainable, and inclusive learning communities.

At an early age, Maureen developed a love of science, the natural world, and community service. While raising her two sons in New Westminster, she has remained deeply involved in her community. She has coached Little League, organized fundraising for an accessible playground, participated in cycling advocacy, supported school clubs and extracurricular activities, and contributed to local organizations including New West Environmental Partners and the Climate Action HUB.

Maureen earned a Bachelor of Science from McGill University before moving to Victoria to complete a Master’s degree in Physics at the University of Victoria, later conducting research in nuclear physics at TRIUMF on the UBC campus.

Her scientific background and experience as a parent and educator shaped her commitment to environmental action. From 2019 to 2023, she participated alongside peaceful land defenders working to protect forest corridors and salmon-bearing streams affected by a proposed pipeline expansion.

Recognizing the role local governments can play in addressing climate change, Maureen helped bring activists from communities across British Columbia together to create the Climate Safe Cities Coalition. The initiative grew from a campaign supporting the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty into a province-wide effort working with municipal councils on policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Maureen is running to advocate for stronger public services, affordable housing, support for families and small businesses, environmental stewardship, and investments that build resilient communities for the next generation. A vote for Maureen and the BC Greens is a vote for better for the people of New Westminster and Coquitlam.
