Pete Fry becomes first Green mayor of a major city in Canada, signals surge towards Greens in lead up to provincial elections

Oct 18, 2026

Lək̓ʔəŋən [LEKWUNGEN] TERRITORY / VICTORIA, B.C. — Following Pete Fry’s election as mayor of Vancouver, the BC Greens released this statement:

“History was made tonight. Vancouver, the largest city in British Columbia, has elected a Green mayor for the first time.

Pete Fry and the Vancouver Greens ran on making Vancouver a city people can actually afford. He promised to bring back a Renters’ Office, build homes that stay publicly owned, and judge every city policy by whether it makes life more affordable for the people who live there.

It’s the same fight BC Greens are bringing to people across this province — addressing the affordability crisis so the people who keep B.C. running can build a life here. That means homes within reach, care you can count on, and challenging an economic system that benefits the few at the cost of the many.

Today, Pete Fry evicted Ken Sim. His victory shows that Green politics aren’t just popular, they’re winning. Next week, British Columbians can make it happen across the province.

Congratulations to our guy, Pete Fry and to all the other Greens and progressives that were elected last night.”

In addition to Vancouver former Green Party candidates were also elected in Chase, BC (Mayor), and Lillooet, BC (Councilor).
