“I’m running for MLA because the only way out of this is to do something different.”

Nick Gottlieb is a writer, researcher, community organizer, and PhD candidate at Simon Fraser University. His priorities for the change we need are shaped by his research into corporate power and his experience organizing in communities across British Columbia. He is running to advocate for greater investment in healthcare, housing, affordability, workers, and a liveable future, while challenging what he sees as excessive corporate influence over public policy.

For Nick, research and community organizing go hand in hand. While living in Squamish, he helped found the Squamish Resilience Network and co-led a campaign supporting the community’s “Just Recovery” initiative. Since moving to Terrace, where he has lived for the past five years, he has helped establish the Skeena Local Action Network and has been involved in campaigns focused on housing affordability, environmental protection, international solidarity, and proposed data centre development in the region.

His research focuses on the political economy of Canada’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, including corporate influence on government, regional economic development, and the role of LNG in a changing global economy. In 2025, he was awarded a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.

Nick’s writing and journalism have appeared in Canada’s National Observer, the Vancouver Sun, Business in Vancouver, and other publications, and he is a regular columnist with Canadian Dimension. He has also published reports based on his research and presented his work to universities, community groups, and grassroots organizers.

He has also contributed his technical expertise to environmental and community initiatives, including the UBC Big Tree Registry and forestry advocacy projects. He serves on the board of BC Whitewater, a non-profit organization advocating for public access to free-flowing rivers.

Outside of his research and organizing work, Nick is an outdoorsman and award-winning photographer who spends much of his free time exploring the mountains and rivers of British Columbia. He is running to bring his experience as a researcher, writer, and grassroots organizer to be a committed champion for the people of the Skeena region, who deserve to believe in better.
